Gristmill

Rails backend with an Inertia and React front end, no separate API

About this starter

Gristmill is for Rails developers who want React screens without building a JSON API. Inertia Rails renders React pages straight from controllers, with TypeScript types generated from serializers. The kit includes email and Google sign-in, teams with roles, Stripe subscriptions through the Pay gem, a shadcn-style component library, background jobs with Sidekiq and an admin built in the same React stack.

It is opinionated about keeping routing and authorization in Rails, which means one source of truth for permissions. The limitation: two toolchains. You run Vite and Rails side by side, and some Rails conventions such as flash messages and form errors need small Inertia adapters that occasionally surprise new contributors.

Highlights

  • 01React pages rendered from Rails controllers
  • 02TypeScript types generated from serializers
