Palette Press

Pull a usable palette out of any photo, then export it as tokens

About this resource

Palette Press extracts 5 to 12 colors from an uploaded image, then sorts them into roles: background, surface, text, primary and accent. You can lock colors, nudge them, and check that text roles pass contrast before exporting CSS variables, JSON tokens, an ASE swatch file or a PNG palette card.

It's a nice starting point for brand explorations, moodboards and building a site theme around a hero photo. The tool is free, runs in the browser and never uploads images to a server. The caveat: role assignment works best with photos that have a clear light or dark base; busy, colorful images often need manual sorting.

Highlights

  • 01Assigns colors to roles, not just a strip of swatches
  • 02Runs locally; images never leave the browser
  • 03Exports CSS, JSON, ASE and a palette card
