Murmurbox

Open-source dictation that runs locally and types into any app

About this tool

Murmurbox is a desktop dictation tool built on open speech-recognition models. Press a hotkey, speak, and the text appears in whatever app has focus, with punctuation and simple commands like new paragraph. Everything runs on your own machine, and custom vocabulary files handle names, product terms and code identifiers.

Writers with repetitive strain injuries, developers who want to dictate commit messages and anyone in a privacy-sensitive job are the main users. Community packages add support for 40 languages. Accuracy is close to the cloud services for clear speech in quiet rooms, but it lags with crosstalk and heavy accents, and the first run downloads a model of about 1.5 GB.
