Proofhound

An offline grammar and clarity checker that never sends your text anywhere

About this tool

Proofhound runs a small language model entirely on your laptop and checks grammar, wordiness and unclear references in any text field through a desktop app and browser extension. Nothing leaves the machine, which is the whole point: legal, medical and HR teams can use it on documents they are not allowed to paste into a cloud service.

The checks are conservative. It catches agreement errors, doubled words, long sentences and ambiguous pronouns well, but its rewrite suggestions are plainer than the cloud tools and it does not offer tone presets. It needs about 4 GB of free memory and runs best on Apple silicon or a recent GPU. The app is free, funded by a paid admin console for IT departments.

Highlights

  • 01Runs entirely on-device with no network calls
